I took this early one morning during mating season. It was taken with a 10D, 1/180 @ F5.6 with a 75-300IS lens.

Thanks for looking and comments welcome

Good attempt.

I'll tell you what I think could be better.

For my taste this frame is too small for the bird. I'd like to see more space in front of it, and probably also a bit on top and on the bottom.

Exposures of whites are tricky. The back is blown. What kind of light did you have? Anyway. This is a hard part to conquer, but once you get it, it shouldn't be much of a problem any more. (Though I sometimes completely screw up a roll, not knowing why)

Then the bird probably moved during your exposure. The head seems to have. Result it doesn't look sharp any more. Keep an eye on the exposure times when you shoot moving objects. I've shot long exp times on grey herons while they were standing perfectly still, but this one obviously isn't.

The potential of this shot is very good. I love to see more.

Roger, this is an appealing shot. The whites in the center may be a hair overdone, but that's not much of a problem. I would like to see more room at the bottom for the Snowy's virtual legs and more room in front for him to look into. The head and other portions of the bird appear somewhat soft.

Pretty much agree with the others - a very nice looking bird and a nice rich blue background. Even though the feet are beneath the water, if the frame is cut off before the invisible end of the feet, the human mind feels the image is cropped to tight as we complete the feet in our minds. Zooming out to 200mm would have made this an excellent image.

A little room for the Snowy to look into would improve this. Hard to get the whites right with a dark background, exposure is well done.

I'm with the others in that he needs a little more room. A great subject though, just needs a little more work :).

Yes, in reading the statements above, I find no need to repeat them. I love the color of the water.

You already have some good suggestions here, so I'll just say I like the puffed up look and stance of this bird.
