Another recent pileated image. This was taken in the same park that Jerry Merrell's recent eagle image came from.

10D, 600IS, ISO 200, EV-1, fill-1 about 10 inches above the lens, full frame

I really like this one. The near-balance of the bird's exposure and that for the BG feels a little odd to me, but when I spend some time just looking at the details in the bird it doesn't seem to be there any more for me.

Could you have gotten away with -2/3 on the FF? Or would that have thrown out the whites? Regardless, I really like that you have another OOF trunk in the BG mirroring the perch.

Jim, A splendid 'Woody' at work!! My only minor distraction is the blue circle above his beak. Hope he's carving a nest cavity ...

Jim, wonderful bird and great exposure, the pulling on the bark is a bonus IMO, BG could be less congested , still very nice as is!!! Congrats!! 8)

A beauty, Jim. He's really working at that tree. Would like to see the blue circular spot above his beak disappear.

BTW, your cover image is out of this world. Antarctica looks like another planet. Superb work, Jim.

Matt, I tend to underexpose for fear of blowing out the whites and correct when I convert from RAW, but probably could have gotten away with fill at -2/3 since my flash is above the lens quite a bit.

Jill, Alex and Sandy.. consider the blue spot gone in future postings of this image. Sandy, Antarctica was spectacular.

I'm really jealous of this one. I've only seen one and I'd love to have a shot at one. Excellent action. You've sure found some honey spots lately.

Jim,

A very sweet image indeed. Sounds like my only nit has been dealt with. :D

This is really terrific. I love the sharpness of the eye and that red crest.

Jim,

I think this is a very nice image. I have been shooting in this park for 11 years and have never been able to simultaneously get details in the whites, blacks and BG when photographing these birds. Having shot with you several times, I like the way you use flash and exposure, considering these three important details and the way you vary your technique according to the conditions.
Jerry Merrell
