Hello NatureScapers..

In May, I spent a week in southwest Florida. One evening, I was able to hang out on Lido Key in the Sarasota area. Adjacent to the least tern colony, many of the skimmers were setting up camp. Flight shooting was terrific as they were banking into the wind, putting their wings up into the setting sun. I bellied crawled along the sand (broken shells) until I was able to make this approach for a close up. The sun was dropping to the horizon as I made my image. I did not use flash because I did not want to scare my subject nor change the color balance of the light from the setting sun.

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggetions.

Beautiful image, Dennis. The light appears good and you've handled the exposure just about perfectly. If you would get rid of about half the OOF area on the bottom, the composition would be just right for me.

Dennis,

Great light and a pretty bird. I have never been able to get that close. Really well done.

Exellent exposure!!!!

Blacks and whites are fine. This is a personal shot of a bird with a very ugly bill. Why don't they evolve on...

This is excellent! The sand covered tip of the lower bill merges slightly with the beach but I don't how you could have gotten any lower to avoid it. I doubt if the skimmer would have responded to a request to lift its head just a bit! This is a really tiny nit and this is an image I'd love to have.

Cool closeup. Like the detail in that strange bill and the excellent light. Glad you chose not to use flash. Agree with Sandy's crop suggestion.

I really like the background and the way the light highlites the rim of the scrape. The detail of the skimmer is amazing.

WOW. What a neat intimate portrait of a skimmer. Well worth the crawl.

Excellent shot.....I, too would crop off part of the OOF FG. Lido Beach is definintely a nice place for birds. You did a great job of "crawling" to get the low angle.

Dennis,
Very nice. IMHO, this shot would be improved greatly by removing some of the OOF BG (especially the pieces in the upper left) and part of the OOF foreground.

Wonderful perspective. The OOF bottom is a little distracting but I don't think it so bad you need to do anything about it.

Super close-up of a bird I have not gotten to shot. Ambient light worked well here.
