The Eared Grebes at Bolsa Chica frequently surface with a narrow, cylindrical fish that looks like a worm or small snake. This one he dropped and is about to pick up again.

Great shot! I love the intent look on the grebe's face.

Could the snack be a leech?

If you look in the water off the boardwalk where I photographed red-necked grebes last summer, you can see lots of leeches (about 6" or so long) swimming around...

Richard,

A very nice sharp image of the small Grebe. I like the focused attention in the expression.

I have such a soft spot for the grebes. Great shot....looks just like a kid playing with his food at dinner.

What an amazing difference in the plumage of these birds between breeding and non-breeding. Excellent shot. I love the curious look. :)

Good shot. Looking at the actual pixels, you might be able to determine the prey species. Leech doesn't sound right for saltwater.
