Phainopepla Phainopepla nitens

Socorro, New Mexico

Sheri and I had returned to our motel after the morning shoot and spotted this guy in a tree along the road leading into the motel. I know this is just a grab shot but these are such cool looking birds I had to give it a try.

Until this past Monday I had never even seen or heard of a Phainopepla. Neil Soloman posted one on Monday, Arthur Morris showed one in his slide presentation last night, and we ran across this one today. What are the odds? :?

10D, 100-400 @ 400
Eval @ -2/3, Av @ f8, SS 1/1000, ISO 200
Handheld out the car window.
Cropped ~20% all around.

All comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking. :)

Hey Bill,

A bird I really want. Nice detail on this dark bird. A little steep, but great for a grab shot.

It must have heard you were there Bill :)

I have never heard of these either - but that's not surprising!

Sweet shot.

A new one on me too. Just love that head gear :)

Great "grab" shot with excellent detail in the blacks. Couldn't have been easy.

Congrats! These are fun birds - we have quite a few her in AZ. Now you have to get the matching female :) - they look the same but are slate gray!

What a great grab shot....this is one that I never saw. That 10D sure gives you great detail in the black and a glowing eye. Excellent. Glad that I got to see you and Sheri again.

Great shot Bill. As has already been said, the detail in the blacks is terrific. If you were returning to the motel it must have been around mid-day, but even with the harsh sun the bird looks real good. You know, if you had been set up for this shot you probably never would have seen this bird :D
