On the last day in Churchill we had a lot of rain so the ponds were pretty empty of birds. Karen (wife and photo buddy) and I decided one more walk to the shore to watch the Belugas in the mouth of the river would be fun.

Along the shore we were able to creep up to a flock of Bonaparte Gulls and get a few shoots off. This one is a sample.

Canon 1D 500mm asa 250 f@8 tripod. unfortunately I didn't change the batteries out on the flash unit so it didn't fire.
All that learning about fill flash doesn't do any good with dead batteries. :?

thanks for looking comments and suggestions welcome.

Doug, a nice image. The whites are a hair over and a mild blue cast is present. To get both birds in focus, you would have had to stop down considerably more and focus between the birds - a difficult task which may not have been feasible (the ss is not listed).

Wonderful birds I have never seen, Aside from the little USM halo around the first bird , fill-in-flash here was the second thing sorely missed!!!, Otherwise very nice!!
Congrats!! 8)

It's a good thing they have those little white "eyelids" - that makes not having flash not so noticeable since the mind fills in th eyeball.

All that time in Churchill and the good opportunties for Bonaparte's come the day after we left?

I like that you got the pair here in a nice, clean image.

Doug---it's good to see these birds on their breeding territory environment. We get them through here during migration. I like the strong diagonal line that is rimned in light.
