These guys are kind of common in south Texas. However, getting one in a position where he can be photographed is not very common. I was very fortunate to find this guy perched on the cross-arm of a utility pole just off the highway between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi. The image is level - the cross-arm is obviously not. (I swear I had not been drinking.)

Taken from the window (using a bean bag) of my truck, EOS 1D, 600 plus 1.4X TC, incident metering -1/3 (ISO 400, f11, 1/1,000).

All comments welcome. Thanks for taking the time to look.

Bruce, The utility poles are a mixed blessing in many areas..... no trees so the birds have a place to perch but often don't proved a very pleasing perch for photos. This cross post is about as good as utility poles get and the bird is beautiful. I like the pose and the light is nice too. Good job.

Sweet shot, Bruce. The detail is amazing. I'm liking it with a little cropped off the top but that's just a matter of personal taste. :)

Beautiful! I would probably crop in a little tighter if it was mine, however, I like it the way it is also.

Bruce,

The pose is remarkable, showing the tail and wings to good advantage, well done!
