If you look at its range map in Sibley or Geo, you might think the Great Horned Owl would be easy to find. Its range extends from coast to coast, and from Mexico up across Canada through Alaska. Well, don't let the maps fool you. GHO's are definitely not easy to find, and they are even harder to find sitting out in the open where you can photograph them. This one is the most exposed specimen I have ever encountered. And even here, I had to use the clone tool to move that horizontal branch just above the perch "behind" the bird.

Nice image. I assume this is flashed, and if so, it is well balanced with the natural light. I particularly like the spotlighted, naturally lit branches just behind the bird.

The range maps don't mean GHOWs are easy to find and photograph, just that they are present nearly everywhere. Years ago I heard a falconer say there's hardly a square mile in the lower 48 without a GHOW territory. They are much easier to hear--just this week I heard our local birds call for the first time this season--but I've seen them perched in the open in a number of places, from South Texas to northern Minnesota.

aj,
Hey, you didn't send me this one! Nice shot. One year I found 4 Gt Horned nests but never that many again! The way I have found them is by checking out redtail nests from the year before. Nice job getting this guy in the open.

This is a very nice clear image, I feel the BG colours really make the photo.

Nice pose and rich saturation. I might take him off center just a touch.
