This photo was taken at the same strip mine where the grasshopper sparrows were. This was the best shot that I could get of these very timid sparrows. I kind of like the grass as it brings that habitat into the image. What do you think?
EOS 1Ds, 500mm f/4 IS, 2xTC, at f/11, 1/400 sec, ISO 200, ff with BB at -1.7Ev. In PS, shadow/highlight tool, USM, levels cropped to horizontal from vertical.

The shadows were so harsh on this image that I thought that it was useless. With the new shadow/highlight tool in PS CS I was able to bring the contrast under control. The 8x10 print is awesome :)

Wil,
I think the grass makes a perfect setting for these guys. I've only seen and photographed (for the record) one of these as they are accidental in CT. That bird was more like a rodent going from one tuft of grass to another on the ground. Very nice shot.

I like the grasses a lot too. The colors and lines make interesting elements in these sparrow shots. A sharp, clean image.

I'll take a good shot of a bird in its habitat over a good shot against a blank background every time. And I'd take a Henslow's under any conditions. I have never even seen one.
Nice Job,

aj

Nice image of a difficult bird, and I like the grass except for the stalks directly behind the bird's head.

I'm wondering why the shadows were so severe (before PS) when you used flash. Is it possible you were set to CF 14.0, in which case -1.7 might give as little as -2.7, or that you you didn't select high-speed flash for the 1/400 shutter speed? Or even (as I've done a time or two) failed to turn on your external battery pack and then fired before the flash could recycle?

Excellent Image of this species in a natural enviornment. I would much rather see a shot like this than one with a blank background

Beautiful shot. The various layers of grass give a very nice sense of depth.

Very nice!!

Wil,

I really like the fact that you have included the background habitat. This is a very fine photo of a difficult bird.

Wil,

Very nice shot. The grasses show the habitat very well. You did a good job reducing the shadows.

I really like habitat shots for the interest factor as well as showing the bird in its element.
This is one fantastic image! Kudos
