American Avocet - Huntington Beach, CA

Another oldie but goodie for the personal favorites theme. This is not a black and white photo nor has it been desaturated. This American Avocet in winter plumage was taken on a white overcast day in Southern California at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve.

E.J.,
This is as close to looking like a black and white as I've seen. Also a very nice image.

I love the monochromatic look. Perhaps we could initiate a new motif. Monochromatic colour shots without any desaturation.

EJ,

I recognize the start of a wingspread, but have never seen this head position before. Lovely monochromatic feel.

A very unusual capture. Do you know what the bird was trying to accomplish here? Is it just a stretch with the head very close to the water, or maybe a turf display?

If you watch Avocets a lot, this is not an uncommon way for them to stretch. What is uncommon though is to get the timing on the photo so that it is captured for the short moment that the bill and chin are in contact with the water.

Cool shot, E.J. Love the colors (or lack thereof). How did you get him to pose like this?

I think these are one of the most elegant looking birds. I really like the way the curves are accentuated by the monochromatic look here!
