House Sparrow
There's something to be said for a common species that can be found in virtually any part of the country and which is one of the first of childhood bird memories. It's kind of a touch of home. This one was found out in the sticks which is common habitat around these parts. 500 f/4 IS + 2X II, f/8, 1000 mm, 1/15 sec., ISO 200. This is a 50% crop. Thanks in advance for any comments.

I just scattered a few of these when I walked out the door a couple of minutes ago, and that's on the other side of the world. Adaptable indeed. Although the ones over here are a lot less fluffy ;).

This is a beautiful shot Juli, almost like a painting.

I love these little birds and their numbers are decreasing quite remarkably over this side of the pond. They used to be so numerous they were a nuisance, now you are lucky to see them!

We had dozens of these guys living in our yard and my kids really took note of their comings and goings from the feeder on the deck. They certainly are a firsty notable memory for child bird watchers.
This is a very nice pose but to me there appears to be a double or motion blur possibly from flash and ambient light?? Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Brian---thanks for commenting. There is no flash, but the bird had just fluffed itself so at 1/15 sec. there is most likely some motion blur. Does this detract from the photo? :)

Juli,

Nice shot. I like the fluffy pose. The IS worked well allowing you to shoot this at 1/15.

Not just any part of the country, any part of the planet! A nice shot - a little flash to open up the dark parts would make it even better.
