Green Heron (Butorides virescens)
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, FL, on 6 Jun 2003

At dawn I spotted this Greenback in the open. When the sun finally peeked through the trees, I metered a shaft of light on the boardwalk where I was standing. The dim sunlight gave the bird an eerie radiance much like what you see here. I was intrigued by the diagonal cross, though I have other interesting images.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

Sandy, I like the intense look on this guy as well as the compostition.
By the way, we've dropped that "back" and are back to plain old Green Heron :)

Sweet. As clean a shot as anyone is likely to get at Wako! Some artifacts visible along the stem and back.

An excellent Greenie shot. Love the diagonals and the alert hunting posture.

The only shot I have of a GH in the clear is atop a chain link fence. I think I like yours better :D

Jim, glance at the text immediately under the image. I still call it a Greenback on occasions.

Sweet one Sandy. The detail and colors are amazing, I especially like the clenched foot grasping the reed.

Sandy,

Very nice shot. The diagonal lines make this a strong composition. Love the intense look.

Sandy,

A nice shot of my favorite Heron. There is a dim diffuse halo around the body but not the beak.

Ken, I cannot see it on my monitor. Halos occur frequently with contrast masks, especially if the opacity is set too high. No specialized technique was used here - only USM.

This is intense! I love the sharpness and pose and the BG, which I guess is marsh grasses of some type, makes him pop. Excellent stuff! See you a week from Sunday! :D
