This is one of my favourites for a couple of reasons: Harriers are my favourite raptors species, they are so tolerant of humans and nothing is sweeps ones troubles away like a Harrier plying to and fro over a summer saltmarsh. The second reason is that this girl was photographed on the marsh behind my house, along the Annapolis Basin. Haven't seen any females for a couple of weeks but the Grey Ghost (male) still gives a fleeting glimpse once in a while :) . Thanks for looking! Scott

I'm with you about Harriers. They too are my favorite raptor. They have a great face.
I knew before looking at this that if it was a flight image by you it had to be good and it is.

Great capture at eye level...I love these flight pictures.

I did see a harrier a couple of times at Bosque last weekend, sadly nowhere near close enough for a nice shot. There were a lot of Kestrals and at least 2 eagles harrassing the geese.... :-)

Cheers,
Jeff

Scott,

Nice action shot of the bird approaching you. Contrast seems a bit high.

Great looking bird, Scott. The contrast just looks like a PS (over) adjustment and an easy fix.

Excellent shot!!

What a great shot....and of a bird bigger than quarter. I've only seen one harrier and it was just "passing through". Excellent flight shot....as always.

Wonderful capture of a cooperative guy!!!
Well let me tell you Scott, the ones down here are painted by wonderful golden light in bright blue afternoon skies, The problem is that no one can get more than a 100 yards near them, These are planted fields, and do these birds hunt up and down the area, They are this skittish because of some illegitimate born people who last year shot and killed one of the mates of the white tailed Kite pair that used to visit every year, The fact that they hover makes them great for target practice, A few good raptor friends are still looking for this guy or guys, the word went out last year, we want to meet with them , Guido likes to make new friendships!!!
So far this year not a single shooting!!
Congrats!! 8)

Scott, I agree with you about them being a favorite hawk but "tolerant" is not one of the qualities I come across in them very often :) . They for the most part are fairly difficult to get close to and to get close to a perched one without flushing it is a rare experience. Glad someone has some friendly ones! Nice shot.

Excellent shot and I love the look of determination on his face. It's a bit on the contrasty side but still very nice.

Great shot! I was able to get a couple of Harrier flight shots at Bosque last week, but none as good as this.

For those of you going to Bosque this year, I saw several Harriers in the 1 day I was able to spend there 11/14. It was overcast and rainy most of the time.

Terrific light and underwing detail combined with the perspective makes a wonderful image here.

Regards

John
