Santee Lakes was untouched by the recent fires in San Diego. However, the hills to the north and west were thoroughly scorched. It might be my imagination, but there seems to be more of a variety of birdlife at the lakes then I have seen before at this time of year. In particular I have seen more birds that are more typical of the dry scrub brush and desert, like wrentits, white crowned sparrows and the phainopepla (Shown here). I suppose if you consider that the fire destroyed 300,000 acres of habitat, it should not be surprising to see some birds in unusual places.

Excellent image. The light and pose are perfect!

It's maddening and saddening to even fathom the amount of habitat and wildlife (not to mention human life) lost by those fires.

Excellent image, Neil. Very well exposed, especially against the sky. It's nice being able to correct the exposure in post-production.

What a wonderful bird.....one that I have neither heard of nor seen. You did an excellent job getting the detail in the black. The look, pose, and eye is equally exceptional. I think those of us on the East Coast tend to forget about the devastation that has happened in your area. No telling what you may find now and in the future.

This is great!!! One of my favorite birds that inhabits the canyon my parents in San Diego live in. Such a handsome bird and you did so well with the composition and exposure.

What an extraordinary bird. It's lovely, yet the black plumage, pointed crest, and red eye give it a gothic, slightly diabolical look at the same time.

This is really terrific! I love the raised up crest and the way the bird stands out against the blue background.
