I took this photo this past spring at Land Between the Lakes KY. I was in the middle of this guys territory and was able to get him in range while singing. I know that some do not find the background that pleasing. I think that the fact that it is a sycamore is great as they use these trees a lot for nesting. Also, it conveys the "near water" environment where they nest.

Great action here Wil. The head cocked back and singing is great. The bill looks larger than I'd expect to see on this bird but maybe I haven't seen them enough! While the background is not ideal, it places the bird in its habitat and the singing more than makes up for it! Well done.

The bird is rendered beautifully. When I am faced with a bright background situation like this, I will often go to flash as main light and underexpose the ambient significantly.

The bird is beautiful, Wil. The BG is a bit disconcerting but doesn't in any way obscure the bird.

Wil,
The background isn't the greatest but as you say it portrays their habitat. The bird in full song is fantastic! Nice shot.

I'm not bothered by the BG when you have such a gorgeous bird. I've seen several but never gotten any shots of them. Not only did you get a killer shot with excellent detail....you also got him singing with his tongue. Awesome shot!

Will:

The bird is perfect, but the background is not. It may be a sycamore, but there's really no way to tell that...except for a slight hint from the bark on the perch.
Re Greg's comment on the bill size: Protho bills really are this big (and sharp).

I'm not bothered by the BG, though I really like E.J.'s tip.
Gorgeous pose and song catching.
