Lesser Yellowlegs Jamaica Bay, Queens, NY

A few of us had a very productive day down at JB this past Sunday... lots of birds, great light, and only a few bugs... what more could you ask for? This is Gimpy, the yellowlegs with a hurt foot (which you can see here). This was by far the tamest YL I have ever seen. Despite his injury, Gimpy defended his little stretch of the mudflats fiercely against rival YL and hopped around to hunt (and also flew). I caught him here picking up a late breakfast. ;) I hope that you like it!

Canon 1D, 500IS and 1.4X, 1/2000 at f5.6, ISO200. Groundpod/Wimberley.

Great shot! I especially like the gooey effect here.

I really envy the shutter speeds and magnifications you digital folks have available. With my 600+2x combo and 100 speed film this would be a big blur.

I sure hope this guy's leg heals.

It always fills me with awe to watch these birds go on in spite of being being hurt, with no one to complain too, I saw a Herring Gull sitting on a ledge in Helgoland, she sat there for hours, her chick would beg for food and attention and would even drop from exhaustion while waiting for the parent to feed him, I would so often look that way to see what was happening, One morning the chick looked dead , spread wings and feet, and would not move, The parent was gone from view!!, I was certain that he was abandoned for some reason as they often do when the chick is sick or have some sort of problem that only the parents can detect; To my surprise she flew in a while later and landed near the chick, the chick came to life , I was in awe, since I did not see him breath for a long time!!, But what was really amazing was what I saw next, The parent had a broken leg, dangling from her knee, She had gone out to fish and fed her kid, after she was done, she hopped back to the tip of the ledge and went back to sleep, more than like to rest from the pain she was in!! I was floored!!!
I saw the same thing thing day after day while I was there, I only wished them both well and God speed!!
This is what popped into my mind when I saw your image!!
Wonderful in all counts!!! Congrats!!! 8)

Everything is great in this one but I think the extreme low shooting angle put this one over the top. Saaweet.
