Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, St. Paul Island, AK

While visiting the island of St. Paul this past summer we spent an afternoon at the quarry where the Bering Sea variety of these Rosy-Finches were nesting in the crevices of the dirt face of the excavation. The Bering Sea variety of this bird is about 15% larger and has more of a chocolate brown breast and more extensive dark all over as compared to coastal and interior individuals.

I positioned myself above and behind the nesting location after witnessing this bird land there several times. The red rock face was about 100 feet across the quarry and made for a nice background for this species. It actually took a couple hours to have this one land for me, but well worth the wait.

While this in now one of my personal favorites I have never shown it to anyone.

Comments welcomed!

Gorgeous image of a gorgeous bird (and a rarity, I would think, in Roma! ;)).

If this guy was taken in Roma, he's about 1/3 of the planet off course :D

Too bad these guys weren't in their good plumage to go with the great perch and background. An excellent photo.

Awesome photo in every way. I'll be looking for these in Roma tomorrow. :)

If you're going to the Eagle Lady in Homer Alaska, there are lots of these guys around. Unfortunately, I didn't get as nice an image as I would have liked.
This one is a

He has strong remnants of breeding plumage but isn't at peak - the feathers were a little ratty and well below peak colors on all of the birds we saw there - probably a month or so past peak. Check out the Rosy-finches on Sandia Peak if you are ever in that area in late February to really see these guys in their full glory. Gavin even said "You should see these guys at peak plumage" when we were there. That said, this is definitely one of the better looking birds that was there.

I like this a lot! To my eye an image based on variations of one color often is more interesting and appealing than sharp contrasts.
Top class shot.

Hi Greg, yes it is very beautiful! Sorry I have to tell you that, but on my monitor I can see on the BG a big white stain on the up left side of the tail, it's look like blur moon, more than one inch diameter.

Greg -

You should have shown this a long time ago. It's a beauty!
The feather detail and color combination are great.
