Northern-Waterthrush

High Island, Texas

Minolta 7Xi, 600/4, 1.4X, Dual flash, Sensia 100F.

This is one of my earlier dual flash drip shots taken about 8 years ago. Not the greatest photo with all that black in it, but this little warbler spent the whole day feeding in and around the drip pond that I built. On two occasions, he walked into my blind looking for food. One of those times, he actually walked between my legs and just wandered out when he was done. This photo brings back good memories.

What a great story. I think the photo is pretty great too. I really like the way he's walking down to the water as this is how I have always seen this species. I can't believe he actually walked between your legs! I have spent hours looking through brush through binos at Magee Marsh just to catch a quick glimpse of these guys.

Alan -

I normally don't care for a lot of black in my photos either, but it works in this image. These birds are frequently found in some dark forested habitats so this looks entirely natural.

Nice shot, and nice story.

Alan, For this bird this works fine for me too. I especially like the posture of the bird which is so characteristic of them.

No wonder you are so good at set-ups. You have been doing them for at least 8 years. Pretty cool getting this guy right down at the water's edge.

Isn't it amazing how such hyper birds can be so oblivious to your presence at times? I had a GC Kinglet act just like this waterthrush last year. He was so busy poking his way along the forest floor he never once paid me any attention. A few times I even tried to shoo himn out of the shadows and into a patch of light to no avail. Sometimes I think their clock speeds are so high, we move like glaciers in their eyes.

I've never seen one of these - this is an excellent image - looks li9ke it should be in a bird guide of some kind since its probably one of the most descriptive pictures of this bird you'll ever see.

A stunning image and a great story. I need a couple of birds as cooperative as that one.

Great shot and you got him (or her) with the tail up; very typical. I can see why it's a favorite.
