Nikon D2h, 400f2.8 AFS +2x, ISO 500, 1/200@f11

This was taken last evening with a D2h that I was trying to get familiar with before leaving for Bosque in a few days.

I posted this shot particularly as it was shot at ISO 500, which I found to be much cleaner than higher ISO’s in the D1x. I would have tried some at higher ISO’s but she decided it was getting late and returned to the nest tree after this shot.

This may not be processed as well as it could be. I only have Capture 4 on my laptop right now and I have not gotten to work with many NEF’s from the D2h. In general I think they need less processing than those from a D1x. I have found common sharpening settings I use for shots from the D1x are way too much for these.

Overall I am very happy with the D2h. I believe it is a major improvement from the D1 series. The auto focus is much faster and more accurate. Battery life so far seems to be quite good. I’ll see how it does on those cold mornings at Bosque. Colors seem much more accurate to what the shot really was. This body has taken a little getting a used to, there are enough new or moved controls to make you stop and look twice. In particular the multifunction switch has been changed. It is now much more sensitive than the older ones and now has a function when pushed directly in the center. Having 8fps is also something I have not had for a couple of years.

Bill,

This is absolutely beautiful. I love how the delicate tree needles fill the lower part of the frame. Awesome light too.

Congratulations on your new piece of equipment!!

Beautiful shot Bill. The head looks a tad yellowish to me (probably the late day light). I love the comp and perch especially.

Intentional or not it has a "Japanese" silk look to it!!!!, You just can't by this setup at any price, If you shot this RAW you might have a jewel to play with, there is enough latitude in here to properly cook this image into a perfect broth, from the pine needles, sky, bird and light!!!
What a wonderful Casserole it can be, Super nice as is!!!!
Congrats!! 8)

Beautiful, and good to hear the field report on that camera! Seems a touch on the yellow side, but it could be the late light. The greenery and the head turn really make this one for me.

Bill, Have you ever met Tony Medici? He's headed to Bosque and just may want to 'borrow' your D2h briefly.
This is a wonderful eagle image!! Hold onto your new gear!! You have been warned!!! Enjoy Bosque !! :)
