Taken last weekend at the Port Aransas, TX Birding Center. I have been going to that spot at least once a week for the last 2 or 3 years, and there are always a few of these guys flying by, but this it the first decent shot I have gotten.

1D with 600 and 1.4X TC, ambient metering - 1 full stop (ISO 400, 1/500, f16), fill flash at - 1 2/3 (I'm not sure it it "took"). Cropped about 50% from original.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, you were far away. You got great detail here. Don't worry, they'll get closer, all you have to be is ready when they do.

Bruce Nice shot. This handled up well under the crop. If it could handle it, I would crop some more. There's great detail there.

Very nice- worth the continued pursuit I'd say. I like the wing position and the placement of the bird.

Bruce:

I like the wing position, the sharpness and the perfect exposure. Some minor JPEG sharpening halos can be removed easily.

There certainly is a lot of detail for the cropping that you did.....which shows that it's a solid shot to work with. I've never seen them fly. Flight shots aren't easy and I think you've done well. I do notice a few halos and as stated before...can easily be removed. A nice job on this one....you're lucky to have a place to shoot so close to home. Hope you get a lot more chances.

Very nice, Bruce. If you can get away with cropping from the top, the compo would improve.

Amazing detail for a flight image with a 50% crop. Your long lens technique must be perfect! I agree with Sandy that cropping from the top back to a 3:2 aspect ratio would improve the composition. Very nice.

Hi Bruce---your persistence paid off---the detail is quite good at this distance! Nice work!
