This is full frame as this guy landed right in front of me. He then flew straight up and dropped the mussel in order to break it open. I've heard of this behavior, but have never seen it before. I wonder if this behavior is inbred or learned by trial and error.

Richard,

Most amusing. He'd certainly give Jimmy D a run for the money.

Interesting Pose, sweet lighting and good reflexes catching the frame prior to guy's mussle breaking activities.

Geez, had you not told us/me about the mussel I would have thought you found a gull channeling Durante.... :-)

What a riot! Looks like a "Boat Billed Gull", except that no such bird exists.
As for the shell-droppng habit, gulls out here do it all the time. Any pavement near a beach is generally littered with broken shells.

Great catch. I thought it was a digital-composite joke until I read your comments.

Richard,
Wow, I love it! The technicals are all right on the money, but the humor makes all that meaningless. Great job.

Richard,
When I saw the title I figured it had to be Alex :D . What a great pose with that shell. I see them do that all the time but never caught anything like this! Cool shot.
