Elf Owl - Madera Canyon, Arizona
EOS 10D, 600mm, 2x, 1/50, f/13, Off camera Flash, ISO 200

This Elf Owl has been living in the same power pole hole right outside of Cabin 1 at the Santa Rita Lodge in Madera Canyon every summer for many years. In the evening after sunset, he makes his appearance, goes hunting, ususally comes back with a rodent within a few minutes and retires back into his hole. Fortuantely this owl is very used to visitors and photographers. He usually spends a couple of minutes posing like this in his hole. I have carefully observed this owl many times for his reaction to flash and he seems to suffer no adverse effect from it - he doesn't even flinch and quite often swoops out of his hole, gets his prey and comes right back.

For some of you that have been looking at my photography for several years, this is a reshoot with a digital SLR of a shot I posted in various other places several years ago taken on film. The larger dynamic range of digital makes this image far superior of the identical shot I took on film.

Interesting image. What I like most are the edges in the grain around the hole that seem to repeat the mottled plumage on the owl's forehead. Only one flash? The light is nice and even.

Yes, just one flash about 2 feet above the camera.

I know this little guy :) I loved watching the Elf Owls at Madera when I was there about 19 months ago. Some day I hope to return and photograph them.

Nice shot E.J., Looks familiar to me but I'm sure this is a different owl from the one I saw there many years ago :D

What a little sweetheart. Having yet to see this species of owl, I really love this view. I especially like the way the owl is framed by the wood. Thanks for sharing this one. :)

This is wonderful E.J. , the stare is quite hypnotic and the face seems to be bursting out of the screen!

Love it!

I like this very much ... hope he/she is in the same pole for years to come. Just how long do owls live anyway?
Also good to hear the flash has no adverse affects on the owl.

EJ,

This is very nice. I like how the color of the wood complements some of the colors in the owl.

The owl is beautiful. And how considerate of him to live in a picture frame!

This is really kewl... I love the way this looks and the eyes are spot on...

Not related to the image really, but...is it just my imagination or does the plumage around the eyes look like a butterfly? Sorry to digress...

Cheers,
Jeff

EJ,

Very nice. Looks like he's got a bead on your feet. Sorry I never saw him when I was there several years ago.
