I thought this unusual because it's shot with a wide angle lens from a floating blind. I moved the blind next to the nest over a period of about 3 hours and waited until the shift change on the nest
when both were away from the nest for about 10 minutes to move in real close. I then photographed and waited about another 2.5 hours until the next change to back away. A very long, uncomfortable day, but worth it!

Thanks!

Scott,

Neat-o. I did not think they nested so out in the open. Neat habitat view. I hope you went back to get images when the chicks were first hatched.

Jim
Enjoy viewing

Outstanding! I haven't seen many wide angle shots of the common loon much less nesting. That was a lot of well spent effort that went into this.

Scott,

Your effort and patience really paid off big here. I really like the unusual perspective created by using the wide-angle lens.

Excellent shot!!

Unfortunately, there were some large logging trucks that began to roar by on a logging road only about 150 feet away and the loons abandoned this nest about 2 weeks after I took this picture. :( They were young adults and built this nest close to this road. Usually loons are much more secretive with their nest locations. They stayed on the same lake, but didn't try a second nesting. I was very upset for the loons. As well, I was planning to continue to document the family throughout the summer, so I was disappointed, too.

Superb image, Scott. You took great care in not disturbing them. With more experience, I'm hoping these young adults will be wiser next season and find a secluded spot. By then you will wear some netting, too...

Scott,

Very nice shot. It's great to see such an unobstructed view of the nest. Hopefully you will get another opportunity next year.

Fantastic wide angle shot, I love the habitat included here, all the way to the cool clouds.

Sorry to hear about the nest, hopefully they find a better, more protected place to put it next year.
