(Sandhill Crane) Bosque de Apache, New Mexico

Someone recently asked if all I have ever taken pictures of are Eagles. So, I'll skip an Eagle post to prove that I have something other than an Eagle. Next, I'll probably get asked if I ever take pictures of anything with a wing span less than 80 inches or something that's not moving?

Tripod mounted Nikon D1H, 500mm F4.0 AFS, ISO 250, Manual, 1/1250 @ F5. Cropped maybe 20%.

Aha, the Great Red-headed Eagle! You are type-cast, Tony, so you've got to learn to live with it.

BTW, an excellent shot of this eagle. Love the rim-lighting.

I like the underside perspective. It really emphasizes that wing span.

Cool shot, but I thik maybe a bit of a levels adjustment might give it some more kick. You have some severe sharpening halos around the wing tips, but I'm sure thats a web issue.

Matthew, I don't see it. It's no worse than around the legs. It more irregular around the wing tips since they are irregular. Besides, Alex usually scolds me if I over or under sharpen.

What does everyone else think? :?

Tony,
This shot really makes me want to get back to Bosque. I never get tired of seeing these guys, especially in nice shots like this one.

Lovely image, great sense of flight and beatiful spreading wings. I would tweak the image using curves, I suspect you may be able to coax quite a bit more detail out of those underwings.

Tony,

Excellent flight image! Love the position in the frame, would also love to see a wee bit of fill flash and the head ever so slightly more toward the camera. (maybe you could talk him into taking another pass) Sweet image!
