Black Turnstone Monterey, CA

I havn't posted many shorebirds, and there seems to be a shorebird theme going on right now so I though I'd post this from a few years ago.
Shorebirds are such creatures of habit when it comes to feeding. I noticed this one feeding on this Kelp and went and set up next to it and just waited. 20 minutes later he came back and began feeding again, giving me many wonderful oppertunities.

Nikon F5, 600/4, 1.4X, Sensia 100, (can't remember if I used flash)

the kelp by itself would have been a cool shot. The Turnstone is a bonus.

Nice set-up, Alan  . You must have needed a truck to carry it.

Seriously, I particularly like this image because of the BG. The bird is in classic mode, and, as counterpoint, the BG twists and turns. Artistic!

I remember this one from a couple of years ago. I loved it then and I love it now. All that detail and depth of field in the kelp is really something. I can't imagine a finer "habitat" shot for any bird.

Best Black Turnstone I've seen. Just love the kelp surrounding it. Excellent habitat shot and the exposure couldn't be better.

Alan,

I really like this shot with the kelp background. Most people don't seem to like detailed busy backgrounds, but I think the kelp really shows off the turnstone very well, and the detail in the turnstone is great.

For once a busy background works and in this case works exceptionally well. I suspect that you did use flash, as there are no shadows on the Turnstone, but you did remarkably well not to get any flash bounce from the background if this was the case. An excellent shot in all respects, very well done.

The kelp looks great, really adds to the image. I'm headed to Monterey friday to visit the in-laws (with the 600mm of course). Where was this shot in Monterey and what time of year?

The uniqueness of the kelp certainly takes this on over the top. I would have never thought that it would have made such an interesting background. Excellent job!

Alan,
Don't tell me you have a beach with kelp in your backyard. :D
Seriously, the inclusion of the kelp adds a great deal to this shot.
