Taken at Ft. DeSoto 8 days ago. There were at least 20 spoonbills at North Beach and they stayed til almost 9:30 AM

I'd like your opinion on how to shoot this. I chose to move to the left to get a better image of the bird knowing full well I would not be shooting in my shadow and used fill at -1 2/3 and EV at -2/3. Should I have underexposed more and used flash as main light to avoid the shadow on him?

10D, 600IS, 1.4x, slight crop.

Actually, I really like the shadows. The face isn't in shadow at all and the shadows aren't that deep. They also define the shape nicely. I can't decide if there is enough room underneath the bird or not. Maybe if you had taken it without the 1.4x. (Did I just say use less focal length? What am I thinking? )

Still, even with all that said. This is a wonderful image. :D

Jim, It could not be better in my view, the shadows give dimension to the bird, texture and shape, Excellent exposure and super detail, BG is excellent as well, the pose is a winner, just a little more space at the bottom for his virtual feet, Excellent my friend!!! 8)

Aside from preferring more room on the bottom, the finest details and palette of this image make quite a difference. The effect is very pleasing.

Jim:

I believe the shadows are very important here to give a 3-d look, my only nit it ia a little more space for thevirtual legs. I congratulate you especially for the sharpness.

This is really beautiful, the bird appears to have a nice, relaxed pose. The water is smooth and has a beautiful tone to it. The shadows are not a problem for me in the least, this is just fantastic!

Absolutely marvelous. Love the pose and the details throughout. Like the others, the shadows don't bother me at all since the detail is still present. Might like a tad more room at the bottom, but certainly not at the cost of losing the wonderful intimacy that you have here.

Gorgeous, Jim. The absence of shadows would make the image flat. I'd also go for a bit more room below and a slight tweak of Curves to make it pop a bit more. The eye of a Rosey is not easy to get as sharp and as clear as you did.

Jim,

This is a stunning shot of a spoonbill. The detail in the eye is fabulous. I had 6 or so of these guys at the little wet spot right before the last turnin to the parking lot for the North beach, but it was very hard to get one isolated, and the background was nowhere near this pristine and tranquil. Lovely shot indeed.
