Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis)
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, FL, on 6 Jun 2003

Some of you may remember Bittern Baby from the old channel. Well, here’s this lovable character’s first appearance on NSN. No encore presentations for Bittern Baby. All episodes will be brand new.

When I first met Bittern Baby, we were alone and very little time was required for us to bond. Whenever he heard my chirp, he would climb onto the bulrushes and look at me like this.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

Sandy,
Even lit from the side this is a terrific photo. It looking directly at you makes the shot.

Sweet little baby Bittern Sandy. Did he really respond to your chirping? He certainly has an inquisitive little look on his face. One rarely, if ever, sees this species here unless it's from 100 yards away through a spotting scope!

Nice that you have a friend that is willing to pose for you on demand, Sandy! A good shot with nice side lighting ...

Laura, he did indeed respond to my birdlike noises - until a crowd finally gathered and he became less secure. Our baby Leasties at Wako this year were quite comfortable and came close to where I was standing on numerous occasions. In the series you'll see a number of full-frame shots that are much nearer than this.

From the looks of his frazzled feathers it looks as if he has been thoroughly hugged, I just want to remind you that it's illegal to do this to birds!!, Whites to the edge and a lovely little bird!!! great detail to boot!! Congrats!! 8)

Sandy, what a cute little guy you've earned the trust of. I like the amount of environment you left, along with the pleasing subject placement within the environment.

Bittern Baby is one of my favorite stories, I'm glad there are more chapters! Gotta love that punk hairdo. Beautiful light, very nice composition. I agree having him looking directly at you is what makes this so endearing.

Great shot Sandy... I really get a kick out of the fuzzy feathers on his head and the very nice view of his/her feet... Very well done.

Sandy, I'm offering Boomer as a name for this Bittern Baby. Sorry I didn't explain it more fully, but Alex and I enjoy naming the birds!!
