Spotted Dikkop, Burhinus capensis, Zandvlei (near Cape Town), South Africa, October 2002, Eos 3 + 400/5.6L (perhaps 1.4x converter) + Gitzo 326, Full Frame, slight USM.

This is the male of the pair that was living next to our tent. Some of you might know that my girlfriend and I travelled for 2 month through South Africa after we graduated. These birds also functioned as alarm clocks as they started to make a lot of noise just before sun rise. Perfect wake-up.

Finally I have some scans ready for publication on my homepage and here of course. So for the good start of NSN here is my first shot in the bird forum.

Cheers

Peter

Peter, very nice capture of a bird I had never heard of. The image is sharp where it counts. Perhaps a bit more DOF would have gotten more of the body in focus.

Good to see you here, Peter.

A nice shot of this species I have never seen before. Like Sandy I wished for a little more dof ... :)

Good one Peter.

These are nocturnal birds and therefor the "very" early wake-up call for you, but rather a good "night" call for dikkope. :D

Good environmental shot. I Agree with Sandy, a little more DOF (Depth of Field) would have rendered more of the bird in focus and given more of a clue of it's environment.

How interesting! Welcome! Very sharp eye on the bird, very sharply watching you. :) Is the bird on a lawn?

Hey Peter,

This is a very nice sharp detailed photo. I would crop down to get rid of the dark space, It brightens up the image if you do.

A very nice image with wonderful detail. Suggestions given are good. I always appreciate seeing birds that are unfamiliar to me from other places. What a wonderful alarm clock!!

Thanks for the kind words.

I think I agree with the DOF. A bit more would have helped, or it should have been a bit less for a more smeared out BG.

I think I don't agree with the crop. Sure it would brighten the shot up, but I like a bit space around the bird, not to put the bird in a tight box.

Yes, it is on a lawn, very near to the scrub where it runs when it feels dangeour. I was glad it didn't see me as dangeour any more after 2 days. He was protecting it's female. Good guy this is.

These birds have awesome eyes. The ame was the eye.

I will try to post the female tomorrow.

Cheers

Peter

P.S. I hope you like more US-unfamiliar birds as I have plenty left, but it will take some time scanning...

Peter,

Great shot of a bird I haven't seen yet. I hope to travel to Africa some day in the future, but unfortunately I have too many other plans first! I agree with most of what has said above, in that a bit more DOF would have provided better detail in the rest of the body, but the bill, eye, and head are real sharp, and it is a gorgeous image. I also like the shooting angle.

Nice shot,
Chris Fagyal
