You've given me such a nice response to the "glamourous" Black Vulture that I'll post another bird! This young fellow was hanging out on the beach at Ft DeSoto last March, and didn't seem to care that I was crouched nearby. I was able to move in really close for some headshots.

Is that you reflected in the eye? :)

Great detail and the composition really fits the bill (pun intended). What a soft, warm BG.

Danny, are you sure this isn't a Yellow-crowned Night Heron? Its a great photo either way.

Excellent closeup. Love the detail. Looks like a YCNH like EJ said.

Thanks for the comments :)

E.J. and Mike, I was taking a best guess at ID, and thought it looked more like a BCNH in the field guide. I was by no means sure, so I'll take your word that it's a YCNH!

Danny, this is wonderful! It is surely a YCNH; the shape of the bill and longer neck as well as the limited yellow on the bill are all markings that indicate YCNH. Great shot nevertheless!

Danny, this is a YCNH for sure. At this age the crown feathers have no bearing on ID. The broad, black bill is the giveaway.

The bird is very well done. Not being a fan of high key shots, I would have dialed down ambient by 1-2 stops and used flash as main light.

Really nice image, Danny. Out of curiousity, just how close were you to get this much of the bird in the frame?

Thanks, Meg. Not very far...probably around 25 feet or so, as a guess.

Nice head-shot, Danny. I agree with Sandy on dialing down the ambient and adding flash. But, a nice shot as is. Definitely a YCNH.

Nice portrait shot. I like the detail, however I would have liked the entire next to be in focus. The fact the the lower right of the image is OOF leaves me wanting more.

Love the eye, the BG color and feather detail on the head. Would like to see a bit more neck, Danny, but I think the photo is excellent.
