(Adult Bald Eagle) Homer, Alaska

I'm having trouble deciding whether I should keep my 300 F4.0 or get rid of it since I now have the 70-200 VR. With the TC-14EII, the VR is very close to the quality of the 300. This image is one of the reasons I'm having this problem.

What should I do?

Handheld Nikon D1H, 300mm F4.0 AFS, ISO 200, Aperture Priority, 1/1250 @ F5.6. Cropped slightly.

Tony,

Can't help you make your decision on the lens, but there's nothing wrong with the lens judging from this image. Excellent sharpness with killer detail in both the highlights and shadows. Excellent action image!

Well, for starters you could send me the 300mm f/4 and I'l promise to pass it on just as soon as I get my 70-200 VR. Oh, very nice eagle image by the way.

Now that's interesting. I guess people need to be aware if they quote the original message that the image needs to be removed otherwise it will redisplay.

Alan, if you don't mind editing your post and removing the stuff between the IMG tags and the IMG tags. That will remove the image from the quote. (Thanx for doing it Alan! :) )

If you're serious about the lens, contact me off line.
Tony

Wonderful regal bird, good light and nice detail !!, At 5K plus images I am sure you won't run out of Eagle images any time soon!!!

BTW, About the 300mm f/4, If it is Silent Wave (Which I once own) it's a very good lens, the 70-200mm afs-VR with the 2X TC20II won't have the same focusing speed as the 300mm AFS, As soon as you put a teleconverter on any telephoto lens, you will loose a lot of focusing speed !!
There is nothing like the 400mm afs-f/2.8 from the Nikon line, converters can be used effectively for static shot, but for flight shots teleconverters are not recommended!!!, My two centavos!!!

I'd have to agree with Alex - primes always seem to AF notably better than zooms.

When Homer, Bald Eagles and photography are mentioned, I always think of you. This shot only needs a little more sharpness in the right wing, or a little less sharpness in the left wing. Head and eyes are rendered exquisitely.

I don't see the choice. You have to use the sharper of the two, no matter what, n'est pas? This is one of the best you have posted that I can recall. 8)

If you go back to Homer this year, Tony, I'll never see you post anything but eagles for the rest of my life. Come to think of it, that won't be hard to take because 90% of the shots are so very good. This one is not in the 10% category.
