This BCNH (juvenile) shot was taken under rather difficult light. This guy just didn't want to come out of its hiding amongst the branches. No fill was used so as to avoid any casting of unwanted shadow on the subject ... A vertical original turns into a square crop. Image was captured in a local park here in Hong Kong.

EOS-10D, EF200/2.8L + EF1.4x
Evaluative -1/3, ISO 800, handheld

Nice one, KK. The BG is a bit busy.

KK,

The bird is terrific, good job with the fill. The background is a little distracting.

Slightly distracting BG - but the eye detail adds a great deal of life. You've done an excellent job of minimizing the grain at ISO 800 - good job.

Hi KK,

I agree with the rest. I just want to add that I like the position of the head very much. This is one interested NH.

Cheers

I really like this, KK, for the softly shadowed light and the details. Personally, I would burn all the light patches in the BG and increase the contrast of the bird a bit. The 800 ISO worked beautifully as far as I can tell on my monitor.

Thanks Juli for your thoughts!

I too was pleasantly surprised to see the result of ISO 800 in EOS-10D with so little noise. The posted image was actually cropped to 75% full frame, still ... it's not bad, I guess :)

I agree the background is busy, but I am also not a fan of dappled light. Nice pose on the bird though.
