American Avocet Recurvirostra americana

Avocets must be common, I have so many pictures of them. Also, out of all of the pictures I have this is the only one that shows this behavior.

Taken last May at Belmar Park.
EOS-1V, 600/4 IS, Tripod
Provia 100, Eval @ -2/3, Av @ f5.6 SS unrecorded.
Full frame.

Comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking. :)

He got ahold of something icky while he was eating and was trying to rinse it out of his mouth.

Bi,,

A very nice behavoiur shot. The frozen water drops enhance the image. A slight cw rotation to level the water might be good.

Just gorgeous, Bill. I love the water splash. As common as these are for you, I have never seen this species!

Beautiful! Great light and action. This looks like classic behavior just prior to mating.

Bill, have I ever mentioned that I hate you? First for all the wonderful Avocets you got from Belmar. Then you and Sheri go get sweet Avocet shots at Pawnee while I was there. Now you post this beautiful shot in the most gorgeous of light with clean water and the awesome splash.

At least I can revel in the fact that it is crooked!! Small consolation....

Oh, I have a very few Avocet shots for the record but would be embarassed to even post them here. The final score, Avocets 12, Brian 0.

Sweetness Bill!

Nice one Bill. You mentioned it was trying to get something icky off its bill. These guys eat invertabrates out of the mud! What could be icky to an Avocet?! :) :) :)
