The smoke and ash in the air created some nice sunset colors, these at Coronado. This Marbled Godwit was photographed with the Canon EOS 1Ds, and the 500mm f.4 L IS lens with the 1.4X II TC. ISO 250. Evaluative metering at zero: 1/2000 at f/5.6. The swath of color was only about 18 inches wide so I was constantly moving my tripod to try and get an image of a bird in the brightest color. I was pretty much frustrated until this bird paused for a moment for a sip of saltwater...

All comments welcome.

Best and great picture-making to all, Artie

Even without reading your narrative this image has a strong emotional element to it. The firey red reflection, the godwit's slighty open bill - even the tilt of the ground on which it is standing - are what emphasize that feeling.

A very dramatic image!!

Artie

I have been talking with my parents and my siblings that live in San Diego and they have told me of the horrible loss that has occured in my hometown. This is aboslutley beautiful, but I realize the loss that has occured to accomplish this shot. Well done Artie!!!!!

Great color and the open bill is a nice addition. I thought the bird's wake made it look tilted too.

Hey Art -

The color is smokin'! :o

Quite an unusual pose with the open bill. It's really cool. The little bill tip flex is well seen here too.

Creative and surreal.

A truly amazing photo. The water, which looks like molten lava, certainly evokes an emotional response. Poor thirsty little bird.

Hi Gang, Glad that you all liked this one. I did too. To Gregory, I thought that this looked a bit tilted so I rotated it just .8 degrees counterclockwise and it as if it needed to be rotated CW!, so I went back to the original. Best and love to all, Artie

A picture that certainly sets the mood. I think I can sense the heat, smell the smoke and feel the struggle of survival. Well done.
