Beautiful picture... I like the water droplet under the beak and the wave.

Did you do anything to stablize to boat from rocking?

Good grief that is cute. Excellently executed. No nits at all except that it isn't in my files :)
I think that Chas nailed it on the head - one of you best Greg.

Thanks all for the comments! Couple of questions to answer here:

Yes, the little bugger was swimming. The story is not a pretty one and involved it's sibling being eaten by an Adult Sandhill Crane, this one was trying to stay away from the commotion of the adults attacking the cranes. Nature is sometimes very raw and hard to watch.

I failed to mention that I was out of the boat and on the shore of a small island for this shot. I used a tripod set low to the ground.

Certainly a primary strength of the image is that it is evocative, but there are many secondary strengths that combine for a really wonderful image: the drop of water on the bill, the great details and superb craftsmanship, the swell which adds dimension and adds variation from just straight lines. The techniques that made the image so successful are the use of fill flash, the low perspective, everything involved in making the details sharp (superb lens, tripod, flash, focus, photographer's ability to deal with all of these elements). The light is soft and adds to the feeling of the image by making the bird look soft and adding to it's cuteness.

Which one is right? This one or the one on your site. Their facing different ways.

Nice shot either way.
