It took me a moment to realize how sad it was for this fellow. He's trying to scratch and he'll never be able to satisfy that itch.

Interesting, Greg and I photographed a similar bird with one missing foot in La Jolla two years ago - it didn't seem to slow him down too much.

A real heart wrenching image, Richard. I see ducks and geese at the local ponds with damaged and missing feet/legs. They seem to get around just fine. When it comes to the little things like scratching... :(

Unfortunate how many birds get maimed or missing legs , most can adjust rather well to this predicament, there is no question that their lives will much more difficult and therefore a lot shorter as well, I have asked myself many times how this predicament will affect their reproduction , I know for a fact that many animals will reject others that don't look or behave within the normal range of things, fishing line is one of the big culprits in the maiming of these birds.
I will post a gull next time that it is also missing a foot, she can scratch very well and at the same time is an Alpha gull, she got the perch she wanted and was pretty much unafraid of Jill and me !!!
Very nice and touching image!!, Congrats!!! 8)

Richard,

This is a nice image despite the missing leg and foot. You captured some wonderful feather detail.

A very sad, striking shot. I, too, have seen a fair number of birds with missing legs, can't imagine how it happens...maybe I don't want to. Good to see that many of them get around just fine regardless.

Richard -

This would really be a bummer if this guy has lice. :o
I wonder if virtual scratching satisfies the itch or if it just drives the bird out of its mind. Eventually the itch could get so bad that the bird pops an eyeball.
Hey, Alan I think you're right!

Nice behavioral shot, Richard.

Interesting and sad. I watched a Black Turnstone do the same thing with his stump this summer. Great image.
