Great White Heron (Ardea herodias) White Morph

Slightly larger and just as aggressive as his first cousin the Great Blue Heron, his is a magnificent animal to behold, specially when seen up close as is the case at the rehab center in the Florida Keys, sometimes he is just a few feet away from your lens, and not necessarily in a nice perch or in a great pose due to the crowded and narrow walkway at this place, He has also a broader bill if compared to the GBH, light colored pinkish legs is a good tell tale sign that this Heron is a Great White, This image was taken on the small tidal pool in which the Black necked stilts do their nesting, and this is a bird they have to watch out for, since little BNS babies make excellent snacks for the GWH.
D1x, Raw, Lens=80-400mm af-VR-f/4.5-5.6, FL=310mm, Aperture priority, centered weighted metering, 1/8000sec SS-f/5.6, EV=-0.3, ISO=200, WB=Sunny, High speed flash!!
Any comments and or reposts are welcome!!

I wonder if the Black Necked Stilts consider themselves snacks? :?: I certainly wouldn't want to get into an arguement with one of these. :D Interesting side lighting here. :)

Uh oh, where's Sandy? He's crazy about this bird.

A lovely pose of this bird, a simple but elegant image. Nicely done.

The sidelighting gives this a very nice 3-D look. Not only with the modeling of the heron but the heron really stands off of the background.

I hope you wear your safety glasses when you kiss this one.

Heather, No need to worry, Sandy was a little up the walkway having a field day with the Würdemann's Heron who was visiting that day!!!

Alex,

Nice work. The light, exposure, and detail are wonderful. I like how the light adds some feather definition on the side of the heron.

Alex. A great bird presented perfectly!! Ideal light and wonderful detail, as always!!! You've captured a serene scene, which is no easy task at this rehab center. Please tell Sandy we miss him!! Thanks MB!!

Looks like tough lighting - 1/8000! - but the exposure's handled nicely (as always). What is the Nikon's max flash speed?

Rich, Thanks for looking!!, In regards to the maximum flash sync speed for the D1x in normal D-TTL mode is 1/500sec, Here I was looking to photograph the Black Neck Stilts who were doing diving attacks on this Heron trying to make him go away, In this instance I set up my flash for High Speed mode [FP], there is no limit to the sync speed but the flash output is minimal at best, at the distance the Heron was at I am sure it did not have much effect !!, Hope this helps!!! 8)

What a handsome bird. The exposure is more than perfect to give it such detail in the lighting you had. Not an easy bird to shoot where you were ...a cooperative bird and an accomplished photographer made for an awesome shot. Oh.....good tactic to have a diversion for Sandy as well.

I like the buttery color and delicate facial markings that show up so well on my monitor. I don't mind at all and most likely would make the same choice, but could you address your choice in cutting off his little virtual legs?

Oops!!!!, No real justification for chopping off his pretty legs, On the original image the legs are present plus most of his body reflection, since the reflection was not complete I decided for a more up and close look!!!

Real nice Alex. I have never been to the rehab place. It seems like he's quite tolerant of you.

The virtual legs are no biggie in this shot as there is plenty of space below the bird to not make it look chopped to me. Very nice shot.

Excellent catch of this attractive bird! On my (uncalibrated) monitor it looks like it be brightened up a bit without fear of blowing the whites. Very nice!
