Here is one of the juvenile redtails that I shot along with the adult I posted the other day. I have to say the manual focusing on these guys is really hard and I'm out of practice :D . Autofocus just won't lock on them with a background like this... for me anyway. Tried with the 1D as well with the same results autofocus wise. Thanks for looking.

Geez! The color on this one is even better than than the adult image you posted earlier. The hawks position with it's head looking at you make this even better. Outstanding!

Outstanding angle on the hawk apexing the turn and the head turn is great. That background is VERY colorful. It reminds me of an OOF crowd at a stadium or something. Cool shot!

Another excellent shot. I need to find a good place around here to take lots of raptor shots.

Jim, The pose on the hawk is great. I'd try to darken or saturate the BG some and see how it looks.

I love it, but it looks a hair to bright on my monitor. I also would increase saturation a little.

Manual focus? What's that? :)

Only question I have is whether I prefer this shot or your shot of the adult. Very different "feel" to the two with the lighter, more mottled and more OOF background here.

Gorgeous! Love the turning bird and the fantastic background - great colors! Manual focus, too...I have a hard enough time with AF! Wonderful catch.

Great shot. I love the BG and the position of the bird.

I have have tried manual focus on shots like this and it isn't easy. I frequently shoot with a 100-400 plus a 1.4X TC. This makes autofocus very slow, but I still think it's easier than manual focus.

Nailing the focus like you've done here is very impressive. Great job!

Jim,

Nice going and the colors in the BG really convey fall.

Manual focus? My fingers are broken just to think about it! Great catch on the expression of the bird.
