I'm slightly embarrassed by the settings now that I read them back. Why was I at ISO 500 instead of 200? I know why I was at 1/180 (max sync speed) but what made me think the flash would even reach. I also processed this image a while ago so who knows what I could do with it now.

Oh well, it still came out ok. I thought the single leaf would be a sign of fall. No?

Beanbag mounted Nikon D100, 500mm AFS, TC-20EII, ISO 500, Shutter Priority, 1/180 @ F20, SB-80DX, BB. Cropped about 40% off the length.

Look at it this way...you got f20 out of the ISO500.

There isn't anything in this shot that isn't in focus. :D

The colors and sharpness are excellent. I love the Linda Blair pose. Great for Halloween.

Great shot!!

Tony, What a sweet shot. Love the pose and the simple perch with the one leaf. It looks dark to me Tony and I think it's in need of a catchlight. And, while I'm beating you up, I'd take a bit off the left. :)

Gorgeous irregardless of what ISO, Flash strength etc. I am a bit surprised there isn't more grain at 500 ... looks good overall.
The single leaf is a nice touch and complements the colors.

Anthony,

I like the way the leaf balances the shot. I'm reminded of Linda Blair and the head... :D

Yeah, I think you've got enough DOF here Tony  good thing cause I like the lone leaf a lot.

Looks a tad dark to me. Flash doesn't have a prayer, not b/c of distance but b/c of f/stop.

I'm not sure my 500mm has ever been set to f/20!!

All that said, I don't have anything better on this bird in my files!!

Very nice detail on the back feathers. I just love it when the birds watch you more intensely than you it. It shows a kind of brief trusting & interaction.

Maybe you don't like it like this, I have turned into a highkey shot!!
I could have left the BG as is, but I think the new exposure level demanded a much lighter BG, If you don't like it I can delete it!!

Alex's rendering of the bird is good but I don't like the white sky - I much prefer the sky of the original. It would be very easy to have the sky the way it is in the original and have the bird be brighter - that would be an awesome photo. The over the shoulder look and the DOW is good - the tail feathers are outstanding.

Love the bird's pose and the composition; the one leaf is great. Got a chuckle at the f20 with the 500! I'm with E.J. on preferring something between Alex's and yours. You've got the detail in the bird so lightening it dramatically would do wonders here.

Rich
