Belted King Fisher (Ceryle alcyon)

Without the benefit of a blind this wonderful creature is very hard to photograph, even while perching, The good thing is that the road into Shark Valley is pretty narrow, and so the canal that runs along side of it, in spite of this, most times it's cat and mouse game!!, This image was taken on Nov. 28th of last year, which means that if he is going to come back, it won't be long before he shows his feathers!!, Nothing like having the advantage of the Exif information on your digital images  , The light is pretty harsh and I did what I could, a little PS work and the bird is presentable!! (I think)Image cropped for compositional considerations.

Alan, My apologies for not mentioning the perch, if by any chance this perch has been copyrighted already, any patent infringement should be settled out of court like good friends do!!!

A beautiful image. This species is very high on my want list, but seems to be very difficult to get close to. Very nice background and pose for the bird.

Alex,

Nice work. I like the pose with the head turn. The exposure looks very good and the flash did a nice job of reducing the harsh light. I hope he makes an appearance for you again this year.

Excellent detail in the upper chest feathers. These little guys are all head and beak.

I especially like the shingled breast feathers and that perch is amazing.

Terrific! That #TGV2003 perch was just the ticket. Hope Mr. Murphy doesn't charge you too much for using it. Very nice!

Alex,

You've handled the lighting pretty darn well here. The verdict on the perch is still out with me, for originality I'll give it a 10 but I must subtract style points for the dirty bird markings on it!! :)

An extraordinary shot to get without a blind. Such a stately pose....and I really like the tangled vine as a perch. Is this a sign that there may be a merger of the two major perch companies? Oh what possibilites this has....and the names I could conjure up for such a venture. My first thought was "Bring and Brag Perches".
