So, I decided to take a leap and bought myself a new toy, her name is Betsy and it is the Sigma 300-800. Yesterday afternoon was our first date and so, logically, we went to La Jolla. Anyway, she is amazing...

I was reluctant to post a pelican especially after the last week, but I thought this one was pretty good for a first attempt. Not my first pelican by any means, but my first photo experience with big glass. I got some great shots panning, but decided to post this as it was a tiny bit different.

The sun was sweet and the conditions were great for shooting. This was taken just as the sun was setting and was literally the last shot before the sun was gone.

I am off for Canada...Jasper STL workshop, to learn how to use this thing... :-) Hopefully, with Chas looking over my shoulder I can make some images to share.

This guy has a great pose and I really like the composition. As presented it looks a little soft. I took this and applied a few shots of USM @ 100, .2, 0 and it sharpened up pretty good. I also removed it from my hard drive immediately afterward.

Very nice shot!!

Jeff, Congrats on your new little lady. :)

The softness has been mentioned. I might crop off more off the bottom and right. The preening adds a lot.

Whites to the edge and a tad soft, can't put my finger on it, but I can not make up my mind if it is camera shake or a focusing problem, preening action is great!!! 8)

A bit more USM would be great, and from Bill's post sounds like that does the trick! I like how the image has the feeling of hiding around the corner to be able to birdwatch.

Can't wait to hear your "field reports" with this new toy. I really liked my Sigma 50-500. Have fun in Jasper!

A little soft but an interesting composition. With the cliff partially blocking the bird, it may have been better if the bird was looking at you. My preference is to see more of the feathers on these preening shots, just my preference. I like this one.

I guess this means that you've been weight lifting to get into shape? You already know about the softness. I like the framing. Can't wait to see more.
