Nikon D1X 300mm F/4 D 2X 1/500 f/8 -1.0 EV ISO 200 Braced Against Vehicle Door 80% of Fullframe Photographed in Clearwater, Florida.

I have spent considerable time trying to apply suggestions made about my last post into this photograph. I hope this one is a tad brighter and that the details in the dark areas are evident. I have also learned that the VR 80-400mm does not compare in quality with the 300mm F/4 D, even when using the 2X!

Thanks to all for your suggestions on my last post, I have tried my best to apply them here. Comments and suggestions are appreciated, thanks,
Bill Lockhart

I think that you have done a great job with this one. The colors are beautiful...as is the background. There is nice detail and a wonderful pose. I especially love the feathers on top of his head. You certainly took the suggestions to heart and applied them well. You get bonus points for shooting this guy from the car window.

The crop, pose, and size in the frame make a wonderful portrait of this GBH. The windblown feathers add a great deal to the composition, IMHO.

You did very well with applying what you've learned from previous posts. :)

Bill, a great headshot with awesome detail and a wonderful BG. I'm seeing this a little dark. As we discussed in your last post, there is no right or wrong in lightness, but to help me communicate what I'm seeing, I'd like your permission to repost this with the PS steps taken. Love the windblown crest.

Sure, no problem. I am beginning to think that there is an issue with my monitor. I have a very high resolution Dell LCD panel. It looks fine on that monitor and it appears a tad dark on my monitor at the office, also a LCD monitor. The LCDs tend to be very bright, maybe that is my issue. Bill

Nice capture and a lovely bird, backward blown feathers and all, a tad under exposed and contrasty in my monitor as well, I am sure it has to do with the calibration on your LCD, once corrected this image should be fine!!
Congrats!! 8)

Bill, I opened Curves in PS and used the eyedropper on the right and clicked on the lightest part of the photo. That's it. What do you think?

Alan: I am viewing the photograph on my office monitor and your redo is exactly the way it appears on my home monitor. In other words, my home monitor is too dern bright! Thanks for pointing out to me that I have a serious technical problem. I will get it fixed. Thanks for taking the time to do this for me. Much appreciated. Bill

Alan's repost really helps show this image off. The windblown look is really neat, and I love the background.

That's probably the reason I don't own the 80-400 any more. I have a higher percentage of keepers with the 300, although I got very good at using that VR. :D
I like the brightness of this but then again I tend to post dark images too. 8)

Alan's re-post really makes it pop for me.

Love the water BG and especially the wind blown feathers. Nice comp too.

Hi Bill. I agree with the others. Alan's lightened repost is great. I love the windblown feathers.
