May of this year was time to visit a ranch in Northeastern Mexico. I only saw one of these and was lucky to get a shot at it.

What I wouldn't give for a shot of one of these guys. It looks like pretty harsh sunlight but I think that you did a nice job with him.

The light is as mentioned a bit harsh but overall a nice shot of a bird I have yet to get a decent image of.

Steve,

You handled the difficult light very well. I love the pose of this WP. Walter Lance modeled 'Woody Woodpecker' after a Pileated WP. It is easy to see that here. :)

Nice shot!!

Steve, I like the crop, pose and the sky. Good detail in the blacks with that sidelighting.

Steven, good light and nice exposure, great pose as well, looks slightly over-sharpened in my monitor and the colors in his head look blotchy, no idea why!!, Still a nice and wonderful bird!! Congrats!! 8)

As has been said, the light is a little harsh and as a result the perch is a bit bright. But we get these birds when they give us a chance, and catching the head turn adds a lot to this. Great detail in the blacks.

Steve,

Lovely photo but this is not a Pileated Woodpecker. At first glance I had to do a double-take when I saw that "ivory" colored bill but then realized your bird is a Lineated Woodpecker.................a fairly common bird in Mexico.

Steve -

When I first looked at this, I thought it was a pretty weird looking pileated.
Good call by Brian! :D

Cool shot!

Other than the strength of the light the image is a keeper.
