I just liked the head position and overall pose. It might have been better if he had just moved closer, but it was not to be. One good foot, no tail, etc.

Steve,

I like the head angle where you can tell he is intently looking at the tree trunk rather than being bothered by you. It's a little different.

Did you clone anything out of this? I see some sort of artifact just above the head that distracts me. A little blur around that spot would solve it right away. my only other nit is that the image doesn't look as sharp as it could be on my screen. Maybe a little more USM or maybe your focus wasn't locked where you thought it was? The high contrast areas on the back look ok but the sharpness of the low contrast areas of the bird appears to be off. I would think 1/1000 of a second should mean that this isn't just movement of the bird or equipment shake; maybe this is something that can be cleared up in photoshop (I just don't know enough about PS to know how)?

Nice shot.

Michael

I agree with you that the head position is interesting. He looks like he's planning his next move. Nice light too.

Regardless of the very minor nits you mentioned, this is a very nice shot!!

I like the head position....looks like he's pondering life. Maybe a little more DOF might have been the answer with the head....or else a little more USM.

Very nice, Steve - I do like the intent of the head position - these woodpeckers are such beautiful subjects, aren't they? I have not seen one of these yet!
By 1000 mm, do you mean you had a 2xTC? ( excuse if a rather dumb neophyte question). :)

Hi Steve. I like the light and the view of the bird's head. I see what could be cloning above the head and I wish there was more eye contact. All in all though a nice shot.

Nice picture of the bird. I didn't notice the artifact above the bird until Michael mentioned it. I also thought that the back had such high contrast that you may have overdone the USM. Other think there is not enough. I vote that this is great!

Steve, although the bird is showing his trademark colors in the head, I would prefare seeing the head turned more and the eye with a catchlight. Looks to me as though the focus was on the shoulder and not the eye, and a little tight in the frame. A great bird against a great BG.

Nicely done ... only nits would be more DOF and a turn of the head for more eye.
