The weather was supposed to be rainy at home but it was still sunny east so I headed back to the fish hatchery a couple of hours away. For the most part, the weather was gorgeous with lots of birds. There had been reports of Dunlins all around me but I hadn't been able to find any. I was in luck at the fish hatchery with 9 of them....and my first ever to see.

They were rather cooperative although the background was not. As in the past I've had to shoot looking down into the drained ponds. With the hundreds of Canada geese that are there, I can say that laying flat on the ground is not the most fun but with a couple of nice shots from the day, it was worth it.

This was only the third time that I've tried the 10D and I'm still learning how to use it. I guess while the weather is poor this week I might break over and read the manual. I do like the quality of image that it takes...it does seem different than the 1D.

Canon 10D, 500mmL IS, 1.4XTC, tripod (flat to the ground), 550EX
ISO 200, ss 1/320, f/14, EV -1, flash -2
Photoshop - cropped from horizontal with a little added at the top, USM, levels, curves

This is awesome, Lana!
You have done well with your 10D. Love the full stretched wings. The ripple aside is a bonus too. Yes, the BG could have been better but is not too bad ...

Sweet shot Lana. I really like the exposure here, and the little ring in the water is a plus.. Excellent!

This is wonderful Lana. The wing stretch and rippling ring are real plusses. To my eye, the 10D gives a very clean and sharp detail to the image. You are obviously getting the hang of that camera. :D

Lana, Those wings are so sharp and awesome. Great photo. The angle does not look as low as you could have gotten. Getting even lower would blur out the BG that you mentioned. Do you have a ground plate? Still an incredible photo.

At risk of sounding a little patronizing, I could certainly say "You come a long way Baby" I am beginning to think that being near Charles, Greg and EJ , photographic knowledge gets transfered via osmosis, I suspect that it somehow it gets absorbed thru the pores !!!, Your dogged determination to learn and improve is no less meritorious in my view, and just as wonderful !!, In regards to the image, not only does the bird has a wonderful wing stretch but excellent exposure and wonderful detail as well!! 8)
The BG is not ideal but the bird is!!, That's enough for me!!!
Congrats!! 8)

Lana, this is terrific! The BG looks like natural habitat and the wonderful light on the raised wing just brings this one to life. Looks like you might want to keep that 10D!

Wonderful catch of the behavior! I don't mind the background, really, I like how the tones compliment the bird. I especially like the little pool the bird is standing in. I think that 10D is a keeper. :D

I think this is great! I love the feather detail in the wings and the little water ring! :) This looks like one sturdy little Dunlin.

Lana,

Excellent shot. Love that wing stretch and the water rings around the legs. The exposure couldn't be better. You captured great detail in the white feathers under the wing. Nice work.

Lana,

A very nice pose and one I have not been able to capture in over 100 Dunlin shots. Well done!

Lana, This is wonderful. The wings are flashing a V for victory. I wish the BG were more blurred. Your tripod legs were fully down but your lens could have been lower.

#1- Bob Ettinger apparently translated Lana's name into an Eskimo language...

#2: This is a wonderul image. With the bird quartering towards you the wing stretch is mega-cool!

#3: I hate bill shine so that is one more reason that I love this one--the bill is a perfect flat black.

#4: On the basis of the evenly fringed coverts and the one retained rust-colored feather visible on the leading edge of the wing where it connects to the body, I'd call this a juvenile molting to first winter.

#5: Head postion is perfect, and this one is super sharp.

Best to all, Artie
