Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus)

A report went out yesterday on the local birding grapevine about this youngster being sighted by the south entrance to Everglades National Park, My dear friend Jill alerted me to this morsel, and after breakfast we proceeded to try and see if we could have a peak at this jewel, It is from what I understand a rare occurrence for the VFC to come this far south on the State, but there he was, and after a little searching Jill was able to locate him, Then the fun began, He is sort of skittish and without the advantage of a blind , Jill proceeded to slowly bring him close to were I was perched, It took some doing and he flew across the Canal a couple of times, but knowing that he was a creature of habit, Jill waited until he got back to the fence he favors as a perch, without harassing the bird and walking towards him ever so slowly I was able to a get a few shots, No ideal perches but for me it was a challenge and a treat as well, a bird I have been lusting after for a while, I know he is a first year juvenile, and he doesn't have his full colors, but to me he looks wonderful!!!!
Without my dear friend Jill, this would have been impossible!!

A bird I've not seen but would love to have something this nice. More than a record shot here! You'd better give Jill a hug for this. In fact..give her a hug for me

Chip, Not only did she take me to see the bird and did some cowgirl work for me corralling the VFC, but she also treated me for breakfast as a bonus, although I feel like a kept man, no one could have a better birding guide and a wonderful friend as well, I am a lucky man, indeed, I am!!, She also got lots of hugs and kisses too, I, am working on free lunches as well!!

Alex, mi amigo muy bueno, Didn't your Mama tell you there's no such thing as a free lunch? Our excursion to locate this rarity is now among my dearest treasures!! Watching your creative work on these glorious feathers adds greatly to my viewing pleasure. Our shared passion in appreciating these wonders of nature enhances my appreciation tenfold, my dear friend. Seeing the VFC was splendid, and I knew you'd capture him to perfection!!! I thank you for sharing, and again for lunch. :D  :D

We had one of these treasures visit NW Ohio about this time a couple of years ago. What a bird! This is a very nice shot and ,although he doesn't have his full colors, I do think he's gorgeous. I even like the less than ideal perch. :)

What a spectacular image this is. You and Jill make a dynamic duo...and so fortunate you are. You'd better start buying breakfast, lunch, and dinner for this one. A perfect shot of a bird that must be very difficult to shoot. Wonderful capture.....for both of you.

Yep, I remember that bird! Myself and a friend were the first to find it. It was only the second OH record for the species. The OH bird was also an Imm male but was not quite as colorful as this one. It stayed in the same vicinity for about 4 1/2 weeks.

Beautiful bird Alex and a nice BG. The post is not ideal but what were you to do? Perfect shooting angle too. Higher and you see the top of the post, lower you lose the feet.

Way to go!
