Hello Avian NatureScapers:

Haven't seen any puffins over here in a while and I am still filing away images from this summer so I thought I would throw this one up.

St Paul Island AK, Greg Downing Photography Instructional Workshop summer 2003. Drizzling rain and cloudy conditions this day, but weather varied greatly by day, some were even sunny! Had a terrific time and if I remember correctly (Greg/Heather/EJ feel free to chime in) this was up on Ridge on the road to Zap..

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions..

I love these guys! I saw my first ones in AK in August although I didn't get much of a shot at any photos as I was on a lurching boat. The -2 fill flash was probably just the ticket for getting that detail in the black while not burning out the white one bit. Excellent detail in both. Great job handling the exposure.

I also like the way the only green plant in the whole photo comes in out of the corner leading your eye straight at the bird.

Great shot!

Dennis, The lichen and pose are great. Great detail in the blacks. My only nit is the rock that projects and blocks some of him.

Dennis this is one of my favorite shots from the St.Paul trip. These puffins are outstanding and I love all the rock and vegatation. Your exposure and composition is PERFECT as usual and I think the rock in front works for me because it flows with the birds neck line and pose. Nice job! :D

Dennis,

Exposure is right on and love the composition!

What makes this shot unusual is that the puffin seems to be in a rather akward position clinging to the rock ...

Yup this was taken in the "shooting gallery" - a small landing that you had to climb down to and set up in tight quarters.

The Puffin looks to be in a precarious position. Looking out from the rocks in that position gives this image a real dramatic feel, IMO. :)

This is up to your usual high standards, Dennis. Very nice!!

Very well done, Dennis. The lichens (?) on the rocks provide a nice contrast in color.

I think this is great, Dennis. I really love the colors and the tucked in look of the Puffin. It looks like he could slide right off that cliff!
