Taken from a hide I had set up on a small creek. A stick was placed to the left for the birds to land before bathing or drinking.

One flash is straight on, one off to the right and another to the right, this time behind.

I think I need to have one flash dedicated to the background. That shoud even out the light better. Might try the four flash system I use for photographing Bowerbirds

This finch is about 2-3ft from the lens.

There is no way to avoid HOM when using flash in mixed lighting like this situation. ( HOM = the twin highlights in the eyes)

Cute little bird! I agree that some add'l light on the BG would help.

Wayne,

The backround is a bit busy to me. But what a beautiful bird! Very well exposed and the red just jumps out on my monitor.

Lot's of color and a beautiful bird. I think this bird would work against a dark bg.

Wayne,

Australian finches are every bit as colorful as the parrots. This little guy is really pretty. I agree with Chip that a dark bg would work nicely with this bird.

BTW - Just a reminder that the posting interval in the Birds Forum is 1 image every 48 hours. Thank you for your enthusiasm though. :D

I could spend a year in Australia and not even begin to fill my pixel appetite, Incredible country, incredible animals and incredible birds, What a pretty masked Bandolero this finch is!! Just wonderful.
To make this image even better you'll need the following:
An Allan Murphy painted BG
A three flash setup is plenty
And cloning out one of the catchlites
Congrats!! 8)

Wayne, I would make this a vertical, which would remove some of the dark background. Beautiful bird.

Hi Wayne, what a beautiful little bird! I like the "busy" background, as it shows where the bird spends at least some of its time.

You're shooting at F11. Have you tried to see what this looks like more opened? Love the bird. :)

Tough shot. I guess a perch is the only way to get these birds to sit still for a second.

Great result.
