Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis)

Built more for prolonged flight than for speed, All Pelicans sport a huge wing span, They are not small bird by any measure and their life in the sea demands long wings to search for food, long days on the wings and the ability to glide long distances, I often see groups of them finding thermals and climbing over one thousand feet, then when high enough they head to their destination without a single wing beat, just feather sailing along conserving their energy for better use!! I, know the bird is tight on the frame but to show the catchlite I had no choice but to crop about 30% all around, also I wanted to show up the magnificent wings!!

Nicely done, as usual. Gotta love those comical feet contrasting with the graceful looking - well, relative to "pelican normal: :? - wings. Wish you didn't have a bit of wing tip shadow on the beak, but even that emphasizes the wingspan.

Hi Alex. I *love* that you didn't clip anything here. The wing span is awesome!

Cropped a little tight, as you indicated, but it's all there and it works just fine.

Alex,

Real nice capture. Those huge wings also act as a braking mechanism along with the funny feet.

Cool shot! Only the shadows on the beak distract.
I think I know that place.

Great Alex. I'd give up the catchlight for more room, especially on the bottom.

I like it - all of the feathers that make up the wings are nicely visible.

The size in the frame works for me but I too would like a little more room on the bottom. That's a personal preference only. :)

Alex, I like all the details in the wing feathers, and the cock of the head. Very nice! The background water is great, too!
