White Pelican, Corpus Christi, Texas

My last Peli for a while. This was taken last spring while scouting in Texas. I’m looking forward to getting back to this spot!

EOS 1D, EF 600/4 IS, 2xIITC, flash as main light; 1/500 @ f11, ISO 250, flash @ -1/3, full frame.

Dip that little growth in the water and he has his own rudder! I find it amusing that pelicans find those growths attractive, but I certainly can't argue with the shot! The blue eye in particular is captivating.

Greg, The blue eye and water drops are captivating. I don't uderstand why the "rudder" is on the beak. There must be someother functional value to it.

Jim
Enjoy viewing

Greg, Love this shot.

Tech question. Is the flash still the main light when you dial in -1/3? Isn't that 1/3 of ambient? Or is the flash still stronger than ambient at - 1/3?

Awesome is an appropriate word here. I wondered what that 'thing' was - a growth you say...amazing and too funny that it's a "come hither" adornment. :) Those cwazy boids. :)

Alan, I usually set the flash to -1/3 for white subjects when shooting flash as main light. In fact, with digital, I often go to minus 2/3.

Here the ambient was in the range of minus 1 1/3 or more, resulting in the flash providing the exposure for the bird, while the ambient is creating the background. The reason I chose this method was for two reasons: to increase shutter speed and to darken the bright background (the clouds reflecting off the water).
