This is Proconsul Emeritus, St. Pete "Pete," of LPU #409. Pete hangs out at the St. Petersburg Florida Pier and supervises contract negotiations with the union and city officials. A tough advocate for the rights of Pelicans, Pete charged me 4 fish for this shot and made me promise to donate funds to the Florida Wildlife Federation for acquisition of properties off the coast of Florida to be set aside as a Union Hall.

Nikon D1X RAW VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 D 400mm 1/640 f/8 ISO 125 Handheld. 75% of Fullframe.

Comments and suggestions for improvement are always welcomed, thanks,
Bill Lockhart

Hi Bill,

I think I know this guy! Only 4 fish? His price must be coming down!. Great story, lovely shot. Most of you know how I feel about square crops...I think this one begs to be a vertical.

Be sure to check out the spanish restaurant (I forget the name) on the 3rd floor (I think) of the building at the end of the pier. Awesome sangria and gotta love the black bean soup!

LPU stands for Local Pelican Union. About four years ago I signed a contract with LPU #409, the Pinellas County, Florida, branch of the International Pelican Union.

In trade for one Internet post every two weeks, LPU #409 members notify me by e-mail of the latest avian news and arrange for special photographic opportunities. For example, yesterday, I got an e-mail from one of the members about a great local spot to capture shots of Cormorants. I checked it out and sure enough there are dozens of them there and all are very cooperative.

Another great benefit is to have the union fly in a lighting crew when you need it. It worked really well for me when I was down at the Venice Rookery. I highly recommend that other bird photographers sign a contract, the benefits are truly amazing.

Currently, the union is negotiating a very special contract with me to bring up an Internet site solely dedicated to the species. Once the site is registered, I will contacting NSN members for their best shots should you care to post them.

I appreciate the comments. Best regards, Bill

Nice image and great story. The square crop doesn't bother me - but then I shoot with a Hasselblad.

The colors and detail are incredible here.

LOL. Wish I owned a Hasselblad! I tried a verticle crop but it would not work here because of the strong line running from lower left to upper right. And, I simply did not have enough room because I took such a tight shot!

Nice closeup, love the detail. What is the bg? Different for a pelican shot.

The background is a wall. I thought the color blended well. I have about a gazillion shots of Pelicans, but all of them have blue backgrounds, this was the first chance I had to find something different.

Very nice image and story.

I'll trade you a couple of Hasselblads for a Canon 600IS. :D
